Our Stud

Melshadan Dorper & White Dorper Stud

Melashdan is a Local Eyre Peninsula Stud. We specialise in the Full blood Dorper and White Dorper breeds. Melashdan White Dorper Stud WD 537 was established in 2008 and the Melashdan Dorper Stud D537 establish in 2015.

Investment in the Melashdan Studs has been quite substantial over the years with over 200 Full blood Registered Stud ewes purchased, forming the foundation of our Stud ewe flock.

All Melashdan Stud ewes are Type 4 & 5 as classed by DSSA Inspector. Classing & Typing of ewes each year in February just prior to joining and the Rams also in February and again in August just prior to our annual on property sale.

Our Stud ewes must perform as much like commercial sheep as possible. We aim to lamb our ewes every 6 to 8 months. They must lamb unassisted and rear a lamb each year. Those that don’t are culled and sold to slaughter.

Melashdan maiden ewe lambs must pass selection by DSSA inspector before they are joined at 8 months of age and be about 45 to 50kg. Melashdan aims to breed a self-replacing Dorper that maintains a good representation of the breed, with high fertility, good muscling, early growth and sound structure.

Well-muscled masculine Rams and early maturing, feminine fertile ewes. Medium framed ewes weaning their own body weight in lamb per year. Lambs achieving sale weight within 5 to 6 months. Structurally sound sheep that last.

Our Sires

Melshadan Dorper & White Dorper Stud
Melshadan 2019 Sire Group

All Melashdan stock bred from Registered Full Blood Dorper & White Dorper Sires.

In 2013 – Melashdan AI 130 top stud ewes to Terraweena Sires 09293 and 077113.

Terraweena Loftus 09293 sold for $45000. The highest price White Dorper Ram ever sold in Australia.

Awarded 2010 and 2011 National Grand Champion Ram

In October 2018 we purchased Burrawang Keg 151216 (ex-stud sire). We used extensively in our stud however we lost him in July 2019 to snake bite. Fortunately we got semen to work on with as he has been breeding exceptionally for us; his progeny have good early growth and scan up with EMD and Fat.

All Kegs progeny born at Melashdan are entered into Sheep Genetics and all excel in their ASBVs. His daughters are outstanding mothers and this reflected in all his progeny’s MWWT (maternal weaning weight) been scored well about the average. This simply means they produced good quality of milk and reared well grown weaners that have a good weaning weight.

KEG is a leading sire in MCP trait in the Shedding Breeds- Sheep Genetics

March 2019 we purchased semen for Burrawang PIET 151420 (after he won the National Champion Ram) and done an AI programme November 2019. He is a sire with strong early growth. We will be doing more programmes with this sire at a later date.

October 2020 we purchased two significant rams Burrawang Crumble 170229 T5 (ex-stud) and Burrawang 190555 T5 (son Burrawang Fatty). Both these rams bring exceptional length and muscling to Melashdan and their progeny are scanning up well.

SHEEP GENETICS

Since 2012 our entire stock have had data collected for their growth and performance together with their full parentage.

Body weight is recorded every 3 months and scanning of eye muscle & fat depth measurements are taken.

This data is entered into the Sheep Genetics breeding programme and each individual animal has its own Australian Sheep Breeding Value calculated.  (ASBVs)

Dorper & White Dorper

THE BREED

The White Dorper was developed in South Africa from the Dorset Horn ram and the Blackhead Persian ewe in the 1930’s.

They were introduced into Australia in the mid 1990’s and are now one of the fastest growing meat sheep breeds in Australia. Their low maintenance, adaptability and hardiness in a variety of climatic and grazing conditions have made them very popular.
